MSI Alpha 15 Review: AMD Ryzen 7 with 144Hz Display

MSI Alpha 15 is one of the MSI’s newest gaming laptops with the AMD processor. This feature-packed gaming laptop is great if you are looking for some intense gaming sessions in the long run.

Well, today we are going to show you the IN-DEPTH review of the new MSI Alpha 15 along with some benchmarks on the AAA titles.

Let’s Get Started…

MSI Alpha 15 Review: The Gaming Laptop of 2020

MSI Alpha 15 Review

The MSI Alpha 15 is a powerpack laptop with a lot of features. But there are two major highlights of this laptop that are really interesting- the Display and also the AMD’s CPU/GPU.

Display and Design

The MSI Alpha comes with a 15.6 inches Full HD IPS panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Plus this laptop comes with AMD Freesync support.

AMD Freesync dynamically adjusts the refresh rate to make sure games look much smoother as screen tearing and stutterings are eliminated.

We have been playing gaming on this MSI and the screen looks brilliant. The experience was smooth and the colours were crisp. And there’s adequate brightness, the viewing angles are great. so, overall a great display.

Not just the games, we streamed online content on this and it looks amazing. The 144 Hz display lives up to its expectations and we really like it.

Well, the design of the MSI Alpha 15 looks functional. It offers a matte black Aluminum lid with the green Phoenix logo. There’s no RGB here if you’re expecting that. The laptop has a regular plastic chassis with a silver paint job around the keyboard.

On the bottom, you get the two cooling fans and the speakers coming to the port’s, there’s an HDMI, mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, USB-C and USB-A ports. There’s also the mic and the headphone jack on the left side. On the right, you get two USB-A ports and an SD card slot and an AC adapter.

Also, the top and side bezels are tiny but the bottom bezels are little thick to accommodate the MSI logo.

CPU and GPU

Moving on to the next big highlight of the MSI Alpha 15 – the AMD CPU and GPU combo. The Alpha 15 is powered by Ryzen 7 3750-H CPU and on GPU end there’s 7nm Radeon RX5500M with 4GB DDR6 memory.

When it comes to storage, there is Kingston 512GB NVMe SSD with an empty 2.5-inch drive bay where you can either use a regular HDD or SATA SSD. There’s also 16GB LPDDR4 RAM.

Now, these are some great specs. Plus the Radeon and Ryzen combo is said to better than the Intel i5-9300H processor and the Nvidia 1650 GPU and this shows in the benchmarks.

We ran multiple benchmarks on the MSI Alpha 15, and as you can see from the benchmarks AMD Ryzen 7 and Radeon 5500M combo does really well.

AMD Ryzen Alpha 15 Gaming Test

Now, we played a number of games on Ryzen 15 ranging from Call of Duty: Warzone, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Apex Legends. And the performance cleared that laptop can handle almost any game you throw at it.

MSI Alpha 15 gaming fps

But, we wanted to push the Radeon RX5500M to its limits. So, we played all the games on 1080P High graphics settings. And the average FPS was pretty good. In PUBG, we got an average FPS of around 71 FPS. In Apex Legends, the FPS was around 75-80 and in Call of Duty: Warzone, we got an FPS of around 78-80.

Now, the FPS dipped down while playing Sekir. It was around 45-50 and it’s pretty decent. So, the MSI Alpha 15 can handle Triple-A titles with a lot of ease and you can always get even better frame rates by lowering the graphics a little bit.

Anyway, we also like the thermal performance of the Alpha 15. The Dual Cooling fans and a lot of heat pipes keep temperatures under control. so you never see the CPU temperatures rise above 80 degrees which is pretty good.

Now, the keyboard does get a little warm at times but we did not get the urge to crank up the fan or give the system some rest.  The fans are usually pretty silent but they do get a bit loud when you switch to extreme performance mode.

Now, about the power consumption well the MSI Alpha 15 has a pretty modest battery. we are talking about a 51 watt-hour battery packed with a 180-watt adapter. Yes, that’s not a big battery and in our uses, the laptop only lasted for two to three hours at max. Obviously, while playing games the laptop needs to be plugged in, but yeah the battery performance of this laptop is pretty average.

    Keyboard and Trackpad

    alpha 15 keyboard

The  Keyboard is a full-size SteelSeries keyboard that isn’t cramped and it has perky RGB lighting support. Also, there is a dedicated SteelSeries button on the top to cycle through the different lighting modes and you can always install SteelSeries Engine 3 to get more controls.

The typing experience is great and key travel is decent. So, no complaints on the keyboard front.

Then there’s trackpad which is a bit on the smaller side which is ok because you’re anyway going to use a mouse to play games.  The touchpad here supports windows precision drivers and the buttons are creaky but loud.

The MSI Alpha 15 is said to have a giant speaker. But the sound output is pretty average. The output is not as loud as you would expect and the base isn’t that great. So, the speakers here are kind of average.

    Conclusion

The MSI Alpha 15 is available for around 90K on Amazon but there’s another variant of this laptop that’s usually available for 75K.

The MSI alpha 15- the 75k variant brings the same design but with a 120Hz IPS display. It has the same AMD Ryzen 7 and the Radeon 5500M with the same cooler booster 5 cooling system. There’s also a 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD combo. Same backlit keyboard but with no customizations.

Overall, MSI Alpha 15 is a great laptop and this was our review on MSI Alpha 15. What do you think? Do you like this laptop? Tell us in the comments below.
